What You’ll Do
As a backend engineer at Sync, you’ll be responsible for designing and maintaining Sync’s core backend systems. Your day-to-day will involve:
- Building and scaling backend services and APIs using Python, Django, and DRF
- Writing queries and geolocation logic using PostGIS to handle dynamic vehicle availability
- Orchestrating background task processing with Celery and Redis (e.g., payouts, fraud workflows, sync jobs)
- Implementing renter verification and fraud detection systems, including data modeling, logging, and alerting
- Optimizing and expanding our payment infrastructure, including refunds and automated payouts
- Owning observability and monitoring of services to ensure reliability
- Improving code quality through AI-assisted unit & integration testing, CI feedback loops, and code reviews
- Ensuring optimal API performance through query optimization, caching, and rate limiting
- Collaborating cross-functionally with frontend, design, and product using shared AI-enhanced documentation and code specs
You’ll have the autonomy to lead projects from conception to deployment, directly influencing the direction and success of our platform.
AI Tools You’re Expected to Use Effectively
We believe modern developers should be 2–3× more productive by using AI well. You should be proficient with any/many of the following:
- GitHub Copilot / Cody / CodeWhisperer – for code generation and refactoring
- ChatGPT / Claude / Gemini – for technical research, architectural reasoning, and draft code review comments
- Cursor IDE / VS Code AI Extensions – to build and debug faster with real-time AI feedback
What You Bring
- 3+ years backend development experience
- Strong Python + Django/DRF foundations
- Experience with Postgres, PostGIS, Redis, Celery
- Hands-on experience with modern AI developer tooling
- Proven work on scalable backend systems, payments, or fraud prevention
- Familiarity with AWS stack: EC2, S3, RDS
- Comfort with Docker, CI/CD workflows, testing automation
- Team-first mindset, async-friendly communication
